Did you know that sometimes it is cheaper to purchase a "flight + hotel" package, even if you just want a "flight"?
Let us explain.
On travelocity.com, there is currently a promo code that will give you $125 off, when you purchase a "flight + hotel" package. The promo code is: "125VIPMC". (Of course any other code would work too... but at the moment, this is the only one we are aware of.)
To use this code, you have to book a plane ticket and a hotel for a 4-night stay (minimum). The total cost of the package must be at least $250 and it has to be paid using a MasterCard.
For instance, if you use this promo code to book a package that includes a $15/night hotel for 4 nights and a $300 plane ticket, that leaves you with a plane ticket discounted by about $65.
Let's recap... your "flight + hotel" package costs $300 (airfare) + $60 (4-night hotel stay at $15/night) = $360.
When you apply the "125VIPMC" promo code on the $360 package, you total is lowered to $235.
The total cost of your "flight + hotel" package is $235. If you had only purchased the airfare, you would have paid $300.
This means you are getting a $65 off discount on your plane ticket.
By default, when you search for a "flight + hotel" package on travelocity, the system will offer you a choice of hotels at the destination of your plane ticket.
Most people dont know that you can also book your hotel in a different city.
For instance, if you choose to fly roundtrip from EWR to SFO, you don't have to book your hotel in SFO. You can book it in a different city, where the hotel rates are extremely low.
Remember... to get the biggest discount on your airfare, you have to minimize the cost of your hotel. To do that, you have to select a very cheap hotel for the shortest stay possible (4 nights). It also means that for your flight, your return date should be 4 days after your departure date.
Step by step, here is the procedure:
- Go to travelocity.com.
- Select the "Flight + Hotel" search option.
- Select your departure and destination cities and travel dates.
Remember, to maximize your rebate on your airfare, your return date should be 4 days after your departure date.
- Click on the "Search now" button.
- When the initial results are displayed, you have to click on the "Change search" link.
- Put a checkmark in the box next to "I prefer to stay in a city other than my destination airport."
- For your hotel, enter the city "Kodaikanal" and the country "India".
- Click the "Search" button to refresh the results.
- Order the results by price, the lowest first.
- Select the "Snooze Inn" hotel.
This hotel has rates as low as $14 and $15 per night.
- Complete your purchase,
but on the very last page, make sure you enter the "125VIPMC" code in the "Promotional Code" box.
- You have to pay using your MasterCard.
Of course, you never show up at the hotel in India, since the whole point of this exercise is to obtain a discount on your airfare.
